How to Use AI for Content Creation—Without Losing Your Voice
Written By Melvin VargheseMelvin Varghese PhD
As therapists and business owners, many of us are curious about using AI to streamline our content creation, whether it’s for blog posts, LinkedIn updates, podcast scripts, or YouTube videos.
But there's one major hesitation:
What if it sounds like a robot wrote it?
In this week's episode of Selling the Couch, I’m joined by Dan Cumberland to explore how to use AI tools like ChatGPT or Claude without sounding like AI. We talk about how to preserve your authentic voice, boost efficiency, and create systems that support your values—not replace them.
Dan is the founder of Dan Cumberland Labs, where he helps small business owners and creative professionals build custom AI workflows. He’s also the creator of AI Training Guide, a free resource that walks you through how to train AI to write like you.
If you’ve ever wondered how to use AI in a values-aligned, ethical, and human way, this episode is a must-listen.
1. AI is not a replacement, it’s a collaborator.
Dan encourages us to see AI as a tool that works with us, not instead of us. The goal is to reduce friction, speed up creative workflows, and preserve your original voice, not to outsource everything to a machine.
“Use AI where you get stuck—not where you thrive.”
2. Your voice is your superpower. Protect it.
Many therapists worry that AI content sounds generic or robotic, and it’s a valid concern. Dan recommends creating a brand voice document (like the one he built for STC) that includes:
- Your values
- Your tone (formal, informal, curious, calm, etc.)
- Style examples (like ethical disclaimers or storytelling patterns)
- Counterexamples (what not to say)
This document becomes your AI compass—ensuring that content stays aligned with your personality and brand.
3. Use the POWER framework for great AI output.
To get better results, Dan teaches the POWER framework:
- Persona: Who you are
- Other: Who your audience is
- Work: What you’re asking AI to do
- Expressions: The style/language you use
- References: Examples of what the finished product should look like
If you feed AI sloppy prompts, you’ll get sloppy output. This framework gives structure and clarity.
4. Use AI to repurpose high-leverage content.
Rather than spending time drafting individual posts, use AI to repurpose long-form content (like podcast interviews or YouTube videos) into:
- Blog posts
- LinkedIn threads
- Email newsletters
- Short-form video clips
- Scripts or outlines
This has been a game-changer for me, especially as I grow Selling the Couch and launch new projects like Quiet Builder.
5. AI can give you your time—and creativity—back.
By freeing up time through AI-powered systems, I’ve created more space for family, executive coaching, and even pursuing my love of golf. You don’t have to be online 24/7 to stay consistent. You just need smart systems that support your life and values.
Why This Matters for Therapists
Therapists often struggle with burnout, over-scheduling, and the desire to build something meaningful outside of 1:1 sessions.
AI gives you an opportunity to:
- Share your voice consistently
- Streamline content workflows
- Delegate tasks without losing your essence
- Focus on higher-leverage activities (teaching, coaching, creating)
But it only works if you train it right.
