My guest today is my friend Namrata Rindani-McMahill, better known as Nam.  She is a therapist in private practice, and is gracious enough to share her findings, her journey, her inspirations, and her successes with us.  I’m excited to share our conversation with you!

Nam relies on a quote by Teddy Roosevelt for daily inspiration, both professionally and personally.  The quote is long, but filled with meaning and inspiration.  (Listen to hear Nam read it beautifully!)  It teaches us that it’s ok to struggle and fail; it’s ok to falter and experience defeat.  What matters is that the attempt was made.  She uses the phrases, “Dare greatly,” and “Be in the arena” to inspire others from Roosevelt’s words.  She teaches that, no matter where you are in your journey, you must PUSH TO THE NEXT LEVEL.  Private practice requires much creativity and work before you see gains.  It’s about the journey as much as about the results!

Nam mentions two things that have been surprising to her on her private practice journey, which now spans 4 years:

  • Recognizing that private practice can be for the pre-licensed therapist, as well as for the licensed.
  • Recognizing that it takes daily work, intention, and effort in the community to make people aware of her practice. It is truly a “work of art” that is constantly changing and growing.

Nam gives recommendations and observations about the following topics:

  • Building a successful private practice is a “parallel process” between the personal and the professional. If you limit yourself, then you limit your practice, but if you allow growth and change personally, then the same will happen professionally.
  • Learn why she says being an “authentic therapist” is freeing and rewarding to the point that she doesn’t dread Mondays anymore!
  • Don’t forget to keep working on who you are while working on your practice.
  • See what she says about finding that “sweet spot” of balance between “I” and “we.” It’s constant work, every single day.
  • Realize that “normal” is subjective. It’s a consensus based on different cultures and ideologies.  Nam grew up in India, so the cultural differences in the US affect every single aspect of the business side of her practice.  She shares in detail about the ramifications of living and working on 2 different continents.

That’s not all!  Listen as we end our conversation with Hot Couch Round questions and answers.  Nam discusses her #1 daily habit, her favorite book, tips for finding mentors, and how to start your own private practice journey.

Nam sums up her advice in this way: “DARE GREATLY, AND BE HUNGRY TO LEARN.”
