Session 244: The Truth About Marriage: Golden Nuggets for Happy Relationships with Roger Nygard

Overview

Today’s show is different from the regular topics of business and entrepreneurship, and it may be one of the most important issues of all. Join us to learn some golden nuggets to help you in your relationships.

Roger Nygard is best known for his highly acclaimed and successful documentary called Trekkies. Today’s conversation is focused on Roger’s latest documentary, The Truth About Marriage. He wanted to figure out what makes happy relationships, so he started out by reading a lot of books on the topic. Roger didn’t stop there because he went on to interview many of the world’s leading relationship experts about the insights they have learned. No matter our circumstances, we are all in relationships of various kinds, whether a romantic relationship, friendships, business relationships, etc. Roger is here to share what he’s learned about connection, expectations, conflict, and more.

What We’ll Learn

  • What prompted Roger to create The Truth About Marriage, and how he undertook the project from an investigative viewpoint
  • How Roger made the leap from being curious to taking action
  • How Roger filtered through the multitude of books on relationships and marriage to decide what to read
  • Relationship Hacks from Roger:
    • The biggest problem is that our expectations are out of sync with who we are as human beings.
      • The solution is acceptance. We need to acknowledge the problems and move on.
    • We need connection AND disconnection from each other in different amounts.
      • The solution is to listen, express empathy, and allow time for disconnection and “orbit.”
    • Express gratitude and use capitalization.
      • The solution is to vocalize your support. Women need their feelings capitalized, and men need their accomplishments capitalized.
    • We need to handle conflict and avoid contempt.
