Welcome! My guest today is Brian Zirngible, who is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Minnesota. Brian is currently in a group practice, but is transitioning into private practice. He wants to focus his practice on musicians, artists, and other creative people. Several months ago, Brian wrote down a target date at which he wanted to be out on his own. Was he out of his mind or is he on track? Join us to find out!
Brian tackles the following aspects about his experience:
- Brian’s decision to transition to private practice came from his desire to do more therapy with more people.
- Even though he has had great support from his group practice, his work there was not developing like he wanted.
- The critical “first things” to do in the transition were to meet with other colleagues in private practice and pick their brains. Research, outreach, networking, and relationships are key elements!
- From those colleagues, specific themes emerged: start sooner than later, make a plan and execute it, and make the necessary phone calls.
- Regarding the location of a private practice, Brian has had to consider staying in the area where his name and brand have already existed for his clients.
- Staying within a budget has been important to consider in leasing office space.
- Brian narrowed his focus and has found a niche by looking for a “really good fit” for himself and his clients.
- Brian asked himself: “What do I really want out of this? What are my priorities?”
- In the Hot Couch Round, Brian shares his most important daily habit, his favorite business-related book, and his favorite online resource. His tip for others just starting out in private practice is to “start earlier than you think you need to.” Listen in to find out what Brian says he would do with $500 and a laptop if he were starting over.
