Welcome! Today’s guest is Robert Cox, a mental health clinician in private practice who recently launched a podcast.  Robert became quite an expert in the field of autism, but then branched  into helping those recovering from addiction. His podcast is The Mindful Recovery Podcast, and is available at the normal podcast outlets. Let’s hear what Robert has to share!

Our conversation covers the following:

  • Robert’s passion was borne out of his personal history with trauma and addiction.
  • After completing his master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling, Robert served as an intern in a recovery center.
  • Robert’s background in Buddhism and Tai Chi brought him in touch with mindfulness, the ability to create emotional space, un-trigger, and slow down in the present moment.
  • Many clients suggested that Robert “record” his voice doing therapy work, but his sense of fear and lack of “buy-in” hindered him.
  • Robert listened to STC Episode 48 about creating multiple streams of income, and it inspired him!
  • Why did Robert decide to launch a podcast? It was a well-established medium with a huge audience size. He enjoys podcasts regularly, so knew the benefits to listeners.
  • When Robert prepared to launch his podcast, he actively joined Facebook groups to connect with people.
  • He knew the niche, the need, and was motivated to think globally about how his expertise could help others.
  • With the launch of his podcast, he finally realized and fulfilled a long-awaited dream to impact the world of addiction recovery.
  • Robert’s dreams for his podcast include expanding his name recognition on the local, regional, and national levels. He looks to monetize his podcast down the road.
  • The biggest surprises for Robert have been the rapid growth of the show and the many referrals he’s received from colleagues.
  • His main purpose in the podcast is NOT to replace listeners’ therapy, but to help them “hold the space between therapy sessions.”
  • Robert realizes his voice can convey empathy to his listeners, and that he has just begun to tap into the podcast potential.
