Welcome to Part 2 of my conversation with Tiffany McLain. If you haven’t listened to Part 1, then I invite you to do that first. Tiffany has a passion to help practitioners tackle money shame and the struggles involved in setting fees. Tiffany recently wrote a blog article entitled The Top Ten Myths Therapists Believe about Setting Fees. Last week’s podcast covered the first five myths, and today we discuss the rest. Join us!

Here are the remaining myths from Tiffany’s article:

6. I should set my fees based on what I deserve.

This attitude is dangerous and ambiguous. Therapists should have an objective view based on their income needs.

7. No one will pay my full fee.

Yes, they will! We have to do good work and find our clients. Consider the perspective of the people we serve, because they choose us for a particular reason.

8. I should set my fees based on what I “feel” I can ask for.

Therapists feel a lot of guilt, conflict, and anxiety about money, even those with several years’ experience.

9. If my fees are low, then I’m bad.

Therapists have to take care of themselves so they don’t get burned out. We have to be kind to ourselves.

10. If my fee is high, it limits who I can work with.

Burnout and overwhelm are what really limits us and our work. Make sure you can show up for your last client of the week as much as for the first one of the week.

Tiffany’s Top Three Takeaways:

  • Know exactly what your fees should be for your lifestyle needs.
  • Ask people for help.
  • Be kind to yourself.
