How To Turn Your Podcast Into a Platform for Income, Impact, and Invitations

When I first started Selling the Couch back in 2015, I didn’t have a master plan.

There was no launch funnel.
No sales sequence.
No fancy gear.

Just me, a folding TV dinner stand from Walmart, a few old grad school textbooks to prop up my mic, and a deep desire to serve therapists like me.

I thought, “Maybe if I talk to some smart folks and share what I’m learning, it’ll help someone else too.”
And that was it.

Fast forward nearly a decade later, and this little podcast has grown into a platform… one that’s created income, impact, and invitations I never could’ve imagined when I hit “record” on episode one.

Today, I want to share how that happened.
Because if you’re a therapist or service-based founder with a podcast—or even just thinking about starting one—this episode is your roadmap for what’s possible after you launch.

Let’s dig in.

Podcasting Isn’t Just a Channel. It’s a Trust-Building Platform.

What people don’t tell you when you start a podcast is that it becomes more than content.

Done right, your podcast becomes a relationship.

It’s where your audience learns to trust you—your voice, your values, your vision.

That trust opens doors:
→ Online courses
→ Speaking gigs
→ Retreats
→ Book deals
→ Coaching clients
→ Strategic partnerships

But before any of those can happen, there’s one key principle I’ve learned:

The transformation starts after the launch.

Let’s talk about how to make it last.

3 Anchors To Turn Your Podcast Into a Platform

1. Listen Closely: Your Next Offer Is Hiding In Plain Sight

I didn’t know my first online course (Healthcasters) would be born out of this podcast.

But the questions came, again and again:
“Hey Mel, how did you launch your podcast?”
“What mic do you use?”
“Do you teach this anywhere?”

At first, I replied with long emails and gear lists.
Eventually, I realized: this is demand.

And that demand turned into a beta course.
That beta course became a thriving program that’s now generated over $340K in revenue and supported 243+ therapists.

👉 Pro tip: Keep a running Google Doc of every question your listeners ask you more than once. That’s your market research.

2. Create Soft Invitations, Not Hard Pitches

Therapists aren’t marketers.
And honestly? That’s often our superpower.

Podcasting is a slow-burn medium. People don’t want to be sold to. They want to feel seen, supported, and safe.

So instead of “salesy” promos, I:

  • Tell stories
  • Teach something valuable
  • Offer a free workshop or resource
  • Invite deeper connection (not pressure a purchase)

This builds a foundation of trust—and trust is the real conversion engine.

3. Build Simple, Heart-Centered Systems Behind the Scenes

You don’t need a 17-step funnel.

What you do need is a thoughtful system that gently guides your listener to what’s next.

In our world, that might look like:

  • A free workshop tied to your episode topic
  • A link to your private coaching page or program
  • A bonus episode that introduces an offer
  • A simple email sequence that feels more like a conversation than a campaign

My favorite invitation?
“If this resonated with you, here’s where to go deeper.”

That’s it.

Because soft closes work when trust is high.

Podcasting Works—But Only If You Work With It

Your podcast can absolutely become a platform for more—more income, more impact, and more invitations to share your wisdom.

But it takes intention.

It takes listening.
It takes systems.
It takes quiet consistency.

So if you’re sitting there wondering, “Can I really build something through my podcast?”

I want you to hear me loud and clear:

Yes. You absolutely can.
And you don’t have to do it alone.
