Why Every Course Creator Should Start A Podcast
Written By Melvin VargheseMelvin Varghese PhD
If you’ve been thinking about creating an online course, or you already have one, you’ve probably wrestled with this question:
How do I market my course in a way that feels sustainable—without burning out?
When I first became licensed as a psychologist back in 2012, podcasting wasn’t even on my radar. But in 2015, I launched the Selling the Couch podcast, and to this day, it’s one of the most life-giving things I’ve ever done.
Starting a podcast felt scary. My early episodes were filled with ums, ahs, and shaky confidence. But podcasting became a way to reconnect with that creative part of me, and to build a platform that’s both personal and professional.
Today I want to share why I believe podcasting is one of the smartest marketing tools for course creators.
1. Podcasts Are Evergreen (Unlike Social Media)
Most course creators play “finite games” on social media—posting daily just to keep up with algorithms. The problem? It’s exhausting. Many of us burn out long before we see results.
Podcasts, on the other hand, are evergreen. An episode you record today can be discovered months or even years later. That means your work compounds over time.
For me, it took about 100 episodes before I saw real traction. But now, the podcast averages around 23–24k downloads a month—even during months when I take a break.
That’s the magic of podcasting: you can rest, while your content keeps serving.
2. Podcasts Build Deeper Trust
Scrolling on LinkedIn or Instagram, it’s easy to feel like content has gotten… surface-level. Quick lists. Quotes without depth.
But podcasting is long-form. Listeners spend 30, 40, sometimes 60 minutes with you. Over time, they begin to feel like they know you.
I’ve lost count of the emails that begin, “Mel, I feel like we’ve been friends for years…” That level of trust is hard to build anywhere else. And trust is exactly what helps your online course grow.
3. Podcasts Let You Market Without Pressure
One of my favorite tools is dynamic ads. Think of them as Lego blocks you can slide into any episode—past or future.
Here’s how I use them:
Pre-roll: Our Online Course Starter Kit (free 7-day email course).
Mid-roll: Our Podcasting Workshop (free 90-minute training).
End-roll: Invitation to join our weekly Selling the Couch newsletter.
No pressure. Just gentle invitations into deeper connection. And because these ads play across all episodes, they continue to bring in new students, even on replay episodes.
4. Podcasts Create a Flywheel Effect
A flywheel is heavy at first. But once it spins, each turn gets easier and builds more momentum.
Here’s how that applies to course creators:
Invite your students onto your podcast to share wins and struggles.
Record live coaching calls as podcast episodes.
End each episode with a call to action (like a free webinar or email course).
Those listeners become students. Some of them become podcast guests.
Round and round it goes—the flywheel keeps spinning.
Final Thoughts
If you’re a course creator wondering where to put your energy, I can’t recommend podcasting enough. It’s evergreen. It builds trust. It markets for you while you rest. And it creates a flywheel that keeps turning.
