398: What Therapists Get Wrong About Selling Their First Online Course

Written By Melvin VargheseMelvin Varghese PhD

I still remember the moment I got my first sale for the Healthcasters podcasting course.

Stripe sent the notification… and instead of excitement, my heart dropped.

My first thought wasn’t, “This is amazing!”

It was:
“Oh no. Now I have to be worth what they paid me.”

I know I’m not alone in this.
A lot of therapists feel guilt or fear around selling.
We became therapists to help people—not to sell things.

But here’s what I’ve learned over nearly a decade of course creation and coaching other therapists through the process:

Selling your course isn’t taking from people.
It’s serving them—at scale.

In this episode, I walk through some of the biggest mindset shifts (and mistakes) therapists face when launching their first course… and what to do instead.

1. Mistake: Thinking Sales = Sleazy

Therapists are especially sensitive to being seen as “pushy.”
So we tend to tiptoe around the idea of selling.

But here’s the truth:
Aligned sales is simply clear communication.
It’s not pressure. It’s a generous invitation.

Instead of “selling,” think of it as saying:

“Here’s a path to go deeper with me if this feels right.”

Your care, ethics, and clinical instincts?
They don’t disappear when you build a course.
They shape it—and that’s what makes it different from the noise.

2. Mistake: Avoiding the Ask Entirely

I used to bury the CTA (call to action) deep in a blog post or newsletter. Or I’d avoid it altogether because I was scared people would unsubscribe.

But I’ve come to realize:
If someone is genuinely interested in your course, and you don’t clearly tell them how to join…

That’s not ethical.
That’s confusing.

Don’t make people guess how to take the next step.
Say it clearly, and kindly.

    3. Mistake: Not Believing in the Value

    Here’s the hardest truth:

If you don’t believe in the value of your course…
it’s really hard for others to believe in it, too.

Confidence doesn’t come from slick sales pages.
    It comes from alignment.

When your course is created from a past version of yourself—something you lived and transformed through—
you don’t need hype. The leap becomes natural.

Bonus Insight: Identity-Based Courses Sell Better

If you’re building a course, here’s a little strategy nugget:

Courses based on identity (like being a “quiet builder”) tend to connect deeper than courses based on a life stage (like new grads or newly licensed folks).

    Why?

Because someone can identify with that identity—yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

It becomes part of their journey, not just a season.

    Final Thoughts

Sales Can Be Gentle and Clear

Over the years, I’ve worked with 55+ therapists to create their first online course. And I’ve learned that ethical, soul-centered selling doesn’t have to feel slimy.

    It can feel grounded.
    It can feel good.
And it can make a real impact—while giving you back your time and energy.
