400: What 400 Podcast Episodes Taught Me About Building a Business That Lasts
Written By Melvin VargheseMelvin Varghese PhD
400 episodes. 10 years. One quiet journey.
When I recorded the first episode of Selling the Couch back in 2015, I had no fancy mic. No flashy launch plan. I was a therapist with a baby monitor on my desk and a simple hope to support our field in new ways.
I didn’t know if anyone would listen.
Today, we’re 400 episodes in. And instead of talking about downloads or strategies, I want to talk about something more honest:
What happens when you build slowly, with care, for the long haul.
I call this quiet building—a way of creating a business that doesn’t drain you, that grows at the pace of your life, and that centers your health and your heart.
Here are 3 truths I’ve learned along the way.
1. Slow Growth Is Often the Healthiest Growth
It might not be sexy. But it’s stable.
In the early days of STC, I moved slowly. I still did clinical work. I wrote emails after hours. I launched courses without big ads.
Honestly, I often wondered if I was doing it wrong.
But one day, a podcasting student emailed me with just one sentence:
“I’m so grateful you created this.”
That sentence reminded me why I started.
Speed makes noise. Depth builds roots.
Slow gave me space to align with my values. To test things. To heal money blocks.
And when the pandemic came and I had to step away from clinical work to care for my newborn, it was slow growth that carried us.
2. Reputation Comes from Repetition
We think credibility comes from viral moments or big achievements.
But really, it comes from consistency.
Publishing when you say you will.
Following through with kindness.
Showing up for your audience week after week.
Over time, you don’t have to “sell” yourself anymore. Your body of work begins to speak for you.
The people who have listened to 40, 100, or 250 episodes… they don’t just trust your info. They trust you.
3. Depth Protects Your Nervous System
Fast growth has a hidden cost.
Your body knows it.
Launch after launch, chasing clicks, trying to stay relevant—it’s a lot.
I’ve done it. I’ve burned out from it.
Now? I’ve chosen something different.
I work Monday through Thursday. I hike. I nap. I pick up my daughter from school. I still create and serve—but not at the cost of my peace.
A business should give you life. Not take it away.
A Gentle Invitation
If you’re in a season of slow growth… if you're building with intention and wondering if it’s “enough”… this is your reminder:
Slow is not a flaw. It’s a feature.
You’re not falling behind. You’re planting roots.
I write more thoughts like this in Quiet Builder, my twice-a-month letter.
It’s calm. It’s thoughtful. It’s for folks building soul businesses—not scale-at-all-costs businesses.
Thank you for walking this journey with me. Here's to the next 400—quietly, patiently, and always with care.
